Together (Full Review SXSW)

Each year, a horror film emerges that surpasses others in terms of acclaim and popularity among horror enthusiasts and critics alike. These films serve as beacons of hope for the genre’s increased recognition within the film industry. Last year, we witnessed this phenomenon with Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, while the previous year’s standout was Danny and Michael Philippou’s Talk To Me! During my attendance at the SXSW film festival, I was unaware that I was about to witness the year’s best horror film. Moreover, it was presented so early in the year. Directed by Michael Shanks, Together is an extraordinary film that ranks among the finest body horror films of the past decade. The film stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie, a couple seeking a fresh start in their new home. The film’s impact left me in a state of profound astonishment. Together stands as the next best horror film to have graced the silver screen. Its enduring legacy will ensure its continued discussion for years to come. It is a true body horror film that will withstand the test of time. In fact, it is likely to become my favorite horror film of the year. A perfect blend of laughs and scares.

What constitutes a compelling horror film? The narrative is arguably one of the most crucial elements that contribute to the overall success of a film. When combined with exceptional film work, outstanding acting, and effective scares, a horror film can be truly remarkable. Dave Franco and Alison Brie embody a dynamic duo that exudes remarkable chemistry on screen. Shanks approached Franco with the script, and he was so captivated by it that he subsequently enlisted Alison’s assistance. This collaboration proved to be mutually beneficial for all involved. The director revealed that the film is loosely based on his personal relationship with his wife, which significantly enhances its authenticity and realism. Notably, both Franco and Brie are married in real life, further contributing to the film’s authenticity. The chemistry between the two stars was palpable, and as a viewer, I desperately desired their success amidst the harrowing events they endure. The narrative is characterized by its originality and creativity, surpassing my expectations in every aspect. It is one of those films that are best experienced without prior knowledge, allowing viewers to fully immerse themselves in the unfolding story.

Body horror movies are not typically my preferred sub-genre, but Together stands out as an exception that completely captivated me. This film perfectly encapsulated my tastes, immersing me in its captivating storyline and masterful crafting of terrifying scenes. Simultaneously, it effortlessly incorporates humor, ensuring that the characters’ reactions to the extraordinary situations remain authentic and relatable. Franco and Brie’s performances were seamlessly synchronized, portraying a genuine couple navigating a challenging journey together. The film provides sufficient background information to establish their identities, relationships, careers, and aspirations, fostering a deep sense of investment in their story. While the mystery itself is somewhat revealed early in the film, it is the subsequent experiences and challenges they face that truly drive the narrative. Throughout the movie, there are several terrifying sequences that linger in the mind long after the credits roll. Some of these scenes are particularly unforgettable, leaving an irreversible mark on my memory. The film’s visual style is striking and surreal, and I experienced one of the most intense jump scares of my life in the Paramount theater at SXSW. The collective reaction of the audience, who jumped out of their seats in unison, was a truly remarkable experience. It was a moment shared by everyone in the theater, creating a sense of camaraderie and shared enjoyment.

Together is a remarkable horror film that effectively combines elements of tension, body horror, and humor. The narrative is compelling, keeping the audience engaged throughout the third act that goes to places I could never have thought of. The film’s ability to evoke both fear and laughter is a testament to its skillful storytelling. The comedic timing between the two leads is intoxicating, and the characters are immediately captivating. The film’s impact was profound, eliciting goosebumps and laughter simultaneously. It is a rare experience to find a horror film that elicits such a strong emotional response. Despite my frequent exposure to horror films, Together managed to deeply affect me. In simple terms, it had me so scared. There were moments when I physically jumped and screamed in surprise, and the entire audience shared these reactions. This level of engagement is a huge achievement of a truly exceptional film. Together was acquired by Neon at Sundance and has the potential to be another success for the studio. It offers a compelling blend of horror and entertainment, and it has the potential to resonate with a wide audience. I eagerly anticipate the horror community’s embrace of this film and its inclusion among the genre’s greatest works. Together is a must-see for horror fans, and its legacy will endure for years to come.
